Kebbi varsity shut indefinitely as student’s death sparks outrage

The management of the Kebbi State University of Science and Technology (KSUSTA), Aliero, has announced the indefinite closure of the institution over the death of Sharif Sale-Kanya,
a final-year student of biochemistry.

According to NAN, Musa Labbo, the institution’s registrar, broke the news in a statement on Sunday.

“This is to inform all students of the university that the management has directed the closure of the school indefinitely. Therefore, all students are hereby directed to leave the university with immediate effect,” it read.

On his part, Hussaini Adamu-Zuru, the varsity’s spokesman, said the students had earlier gone on rampage in Aliero town when they learned of the death of their colleague.

He, however, explained that the school had been closed before the students went on the rampage.

Sale-Kanya, who was about to write his final examination, was said to have bought a handset in Aliero town on Saturday and subsequently made payment through a transfer.

Shortly after purchasing the handset, the 22-year-old had gone into the examination hall and switched it off.

It was learned that when he switched on the handset a few hours later, he realised that the money he transferred for the payment of the phone had been reversed due to network failure.

The deceased was said to have returned to Aliero town to pay for the handset in cash.

But on getting to the place, an angry mob was said to have descended on the student and beaten him into coma.

He was rushed to the General Hospital, Aliero, but was confirmed dead shortly after he was admitted, an eyewitness told NAN.

Nafi’u Abubakar, the state police command’s spokesman, confirmed the incident, noting that efforts are ongoing to ensure those behind the student’s death are brought to book.
