Nigerians ranked third among international students missing classes in Canada

Nigerian students have been reported among nearly 50,000 international students who did not report to their respective colleges and universities following their study permits in Canada.

According to a report by Immigration News Canada on Thursday, Indian and Chinese nationals came first and second respectively in the figures shown.

The report revealed that the total figure represented 6.9 per cent of all foreign students tracked by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada.

“Close to 50,000 international students who were issued study permits to pursue higher education in Canada were reported as ‘no-shows’ by the colleges and universities where they were supposed to be enrolled,” the report said.

It further noted that the figure highlighted an alarming trend that had sparked nationwide discussions about the effectiveness of Canada’s international student compliance system.

In March and April 2024, Canadian universities and colleges submitted compliance reports to the IRCC, disclosing that tens of thousands of international students failed to obey the terms of their study permits.

The International Student Compliance Regime, introduced in 2014, requires designated learning institutions to report twice a year on whether foreign learners are actively enrolled and attending classes.

However, according to the Canadian government data from the spring of 2024, a large number of students from certain countries had significant higher non-compliance rates.

For India, 327,646 were compliant students, 19,582 were non-compliant students, and 12,553 students were recorded as not reported. China had 62,519 compliant students, and 4,279 non-compliant students.

Nigeria came third with 30,920 complaint students, 3,902 non-compliant students, and 1,675 students recorded as not reported, as well as 84.7 per cent and 10.7 per cent compliance and non-compliance rates respectively.
