Ogun nurses want sacked colleagues reinstated

A coalition of nurses and concerned youths in the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu , have appealed to the Ogun State Government to recall two sacked nurses .

The coalition made this demand during a peaceful protest to seek the government ’ s intervention in reinstating the affected workers.

Our correspondent gathered that Aisha Ajibola and Prince Tega were sacked by the management of OOUTH recently.
While Tega was reportedly sacked for participating in September 15 strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ajibola who had spent 15 years in service was reportedly sacked for speaking against the sack of her colleague two months after.
Speaking with journalists in Abeokuta, the leader of themselves coalition , Thomas Abiodun , faulted the process of the sacking of the two OOUTH nurses , pleading with the state government to order its reversal.

The protesters were armed with placards with various inscriptions such as ‘ nurses are not criminals ’ , ‘ Bring Back the two OOUTH nurses ’ , ‘ Stop victimising nurses ’ , and ‘ Governor , please save nurses ’ among others .

Abiodun said , “ We are pleading for the state government ’ s intervention to reinstate the sacked nurses back into services. The CMD and administrator do not have the power to sack anybody . It is only the board .

“ We are pleading that the state government intervenes on our behalf . We have our contemporaries abroad , whenever they come visiting , and we stand beside them , we look like pieces of rag. This is not because we are not working hard but , because we are being made to over work and are underpaid.

“ These nurses are diligent in what they do and do not have any record of negligence . “
When contacted , the Chief Medical Director , OOUTH , Dr . Peter Adefuye , confirmed the sacking of the workers .

He , however , denied that he single -handedly sacked them .

Adefuye described Ajibola ’ s offence as severe misconduct , saying she had written a letter of appeal , begging for mercy .

He said , “ The CMD did not single -handedly sack anybody . Tega ’ s case is already in court . I wonder why he was talking to the press . He has pressed for legal means .

“ For the other lady and the reason the lady was sacked , she has not said the truth .

“ She has just written a letter of appeal , begging for mercy . While she was being interrogated she was using a lawyer , if she can use a lawyer , she can approach a court if her job was wrongly terminated .

“ Her offence was not in any way connected to Tega ’ s matter ; she is trying to whip up sentiment.

“ It is an administrative matter . There are rules , we have mild and severe misconduct. She committed a severe misconduct, that was why she was investigated and found guilty . ”
