Over ‘50 terrorists’ killed as troops foil midnight Boko Haram, ISWAP offensives

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have repelled coordinated attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters on multiple locations across Borno and Yobe.

The defence headquarters said the terrorists launched simultaneous assaults on military bases in Dikwa, Mafa, Gajibo, and Katarko between midnight and 4 am on Thursday.

A statement issued on Thursday by Sani Uba, a lieutenant colonel and media officer for the joint task force, said the troops “fought gallantly and professionally”, repelling the attacks and inflicting “heavy and decisive losses” on the insurgents.

Over 50 terrorists were reportedly killed during the operations, while several others sustained gunshot wounds and fled the scene.

The troops also recovered 38 AK-47 rifles, seven PKT machine guns, five RPG tubes, two GPMGs, hand grenades, and thousands of assorted rounds of ammunition.

Uba said air strikes from the air component of OPHK provided cover for the ground troops, with precision attacks supported by intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) assets.

He added that some soldiers sustained injuries during the encounters but are in stable condition.

Uba added that a few buildings and vehicles were also burnt following drone and RPG fire from the insurgents, particularly in Dikwa and Mafa.

“The military high command commended the gallantry and resilience of the troops. Their performance reaffirms the military’s resolve and capacity to defend the nation’s territorial integrity,” he added.
