Six persons have been killed in an attack by gunmen on a village in Osun state, forcing many residents into a panic mode as insecurity spreads across the country.
Yemisi Opalola, the state police command spokesmen, confirmed the incident in a phone call to TheCable.
She said the gunmen had attacked a village near Wasinmi, a community along Ife/Ibadan way, before daybreak on Sunday.
She added that Wale Olokode, the state commissioner of police, has visited the scene of the incident.
Gunmen attacks are a rare occurrence in Osun state.
Police officers, men of Oodua Peoples Congress and Hunters Group of Nigeria are said to have been deployed in the bush in the area.
The country is witnessing a rise in the spate of attacks by gunmen.
The northern part of Nigeria has, however, been the worse hit by these attacks.
