Voting has commenced in the Anambra governorship election as residents pick their candidates for the state’s top job.
The exercise began around 8:30 am in the 21 local government areas of the South-East state.
Before the commencement of the election, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deployed materials to the polling units.
As early as 7:00 am, INEC officials and security agencies were spotted in polling units setting up for the election.
Shops were closed, major roads deserted as residents filled out to elect their candidates. In some places, youth turned the streets to football pitches, sweating it out.
The popular Onitsha Bridge was cordoned off by security agencies with no vehicular or human movement in sight.
Helicopters were seen hovering over the sky as security operatives ensured a hitch-free election.
Sixteen candidates are jostling for the governorship seat with over two million voters expected to cast their ballot.
