Report: Iranian singer Tataloo sentenced to death for blasphemy

Amir Hossein Maghsoudloo, the singer better known as Tataloo,
A supreme court in Iran has reportedly sentenced Amir Hossein Maghsoudloo, the singer better known as Tataloo, to death for blasphemy.

Guardian UK quoted Iranian newspaper Etemad as saying the singer was sentenced to death on Sunday after he was found guilty of insulting the Prophet Muhammad.

“The supreme court accepted the prosecutor’s objection to a previous five-year jail term on offences including blasphemy,” the report added.

The 37-year-old has been held in custody in Iran since December 2023 following his extradition from Turkey.

Tataloo had been serving a five-year prison sentence for various offenses, including blasphemy. However, his case was reopened at the request of the prosecutor, leading to a retrial and the death penalty.

The report added that the verdict was not final and could still be appealed against.

Tataloo is one of Iran’s most famous and controversial artistes for his full body tattoo and frequent open dialogue toward politics and social aspects of Iran’s younger generations.

This is not the first time the musician, who is known for blending rap, pop, and R&B styles, has been sentenced.

He had previously been sentenced to 10 years in prison for promoting “prostitution” and faced accusations of disseminating anti-regime propaganda and publishing “obscene content”.
