Report: Lakurawa retreats as troops intensify ground, air attacks

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, says members of the Lakurawa terrorist group have been retreating in the wake of a fusillade from troops.

Makama reports that the coordinated air and ground attacks targeted Lakurawa camps in Kebbi and Sokoto states, leading to the seizure of livestock, a vital revenue stream for the group.

The report noted that the attacks were in collaboration with the air component of Operation Fansan Yamma and Operation Farautar Mujiya.

Makama added that the group is withdrawing towards Borgu, a “strategic area near the Nigeria-Benin border”, due to incessant bombardment from the military.

“Known for its remote terrain and access to cross-border livestock and grain markets, Borgu has historically provided cover for the group’s operations and trade-based income sources,” the report reads.

“The Lakurawa group’s retreat suggests a possible attempt to exploit less-monitored border regions to regroup and re-establish revenue streams.

“Intelligence suggests the group may move further south toward Ilesha Bariba in Kwara state, near the Benin border, where their illicit activities might evade closer scrutiny.

“With ongoing operations, security forces are advised to monitor key crossings and market areas in Borgu and Ilesha Bariba to anticipate potential regrouping or the establishment of new smuggling routes that could sustain Lakurawa’s activities.”

‘TROOPS RECOVER STOLEN CATTLE’

Troops of the Nigerian Army also reportedly recovered 38 stolen cattle from suspected Lakurawa terrorists in Sokoto.

Makama reports that the troops, drawn from Headquarters 1 Brigade and 1 Battalion, were deployed in Kalgo village.

The publication quotes intelligence sources as saying that the suspected terrorists abandoned the cattle and fled as troops advanced.

“The recovered livestock was returned to rightful owners in Mera village, Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi state,” the report said.

“Sources confirmed that intensified operations are ongoing to secure the broader area and prevent further incursions by the armed group.

“This recovery operation comes amid a rising threat from Lakurawa terrorists across Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states.”

The report added that suspected members of the same group also raided Kura village in Soron Yamma ward, Binji LGA, on Tuesday.

“The attackers seized a large number of livestock but reportedly did not harm or abduct any villagers, according to local sources,” the report added.
