Rivers Police Arrest Three Over Killing Of Officers, Recover Stolen Rifles

The Rivers State Police Command says it has arrested three suspects in connection with the killing of two police officers during a stop-and-search operation in Aluu, Ikwerre Local Government Area, and recovered firearms stolen during the attack.

The officers were reportedly attacked on June 29, 2026, while carrying out routine duties within the Aluu Division area. One of the officers sustained a severe leg injury that later necessitated amputation before he eventually died. The attackers also carted away the officers’ service AK-47 rifles.

In a statement, the Command said the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adewole Adepoju, immediately directed the deployment of all operational and intelligence assets to track down those responsible and recover the stolen weapons.

The breakthrough came through sustained operations by operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), who arrested three suspected members of the gang.

Police said the operation led to the recovery of three AK-47 rifles and one Scorpion rifle. Investigators have also linked the suspects to other murder cases currently under investigation.

The Command disclosed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend a fourth gang member who remains at large.

Commending the operatives for their efforts, Adepoju described the arrests and recovery of the weapons as a major breakthrough in the investigation and a clear indication of the Command’s determination to bring violent criminals to justice.

“The breakthrough demonstrates the Command’s resolve to ensure that those who attack police officers or engage in violent crimes have no hiding place in Rivers State,” the Commissioner said.

He reiterated the Command’s commitment to the policing vision of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, aimed at protecting lives and property, while warning criminals to abandon unlawful activities or face the full weight of the law.

Adepoju also urged residents to continue supporting the police with timely and credible information to strengthen crime-fighting efforts and enhance public safety across the state.
