Scandal: Wife accuses Imo lawmaker of marriage fraud, fights for child-custody

...Ihezuo: kids are mine, but she is not my wife

A shocking scandal may be rocking the Imo State House of Assembly as Hon. Ikenna Martin Ihezuo, member representing Orlu State Constituency in the state parliament faces strong allegations of marriage fraud, domestic violence, and child abandonment.

His estranged wife, Mrs. Abigail Akachi Ihezuo, has dragged him to the Family Court in Owerri, seeking full custody of their two children and demanding justice for years of alleged exploitation and abuse.

In court documents obtained by our correspondent, Mrs. Ihezuo detailed a harrowing ordeal of manipulation, betrayal, and physical abuse. Key revelations include:

* Forced Resignation from her banking work: Hon. Ihezuo allegedly pressured his wife to resign from her job at Fidelity Bank PLC shortly after their marriage in 2020, promising to set up a business for her. Instead, she lost her savings to the business and his political campaign, only to be later excluded from managing their jointly established supermarkets and guest house.

* Secret Statutory Marriage: While still customarily married to Mrs. Ihezuo, the lawmaker reportedly conducted a statutory marriage with another woman, Rosita Nkechinyere Obijiaku, in Abuja on June 13, 2023. Findings by her estranged wife revealed the lawmaker may have a history of “smart marriage schemes,” having allegedly discarded previous wives after “sucking their best years”, Abigail Ihezuo had filed.

* Violence and Humiliation: Mrs. Ihezuo recounted brutal beatings, public humiliation, and an incident where the lawmaker threw her belongings out of their matrimonial home while drinking with his friends in their home.

* Child Abduction Threat: Fearing retaliation, Mrs. Ihezuo filed for an injunction after Hon. Ihezuo threatened to relocate their children (Stephanie, 4, and Stanley, 1) to the United States under the care of his new wife, leaving her destitute in Nigeria.

5. Economic Sabotage: The lawmaker allegedly sold his wife’s car, stripped her of business oversight, and left her financially stranded, forcing her and the children to rely on public transport despite security risks tied to his political profile.

Court Demands: Custody, Support, and Justice:
Mrs. Ihezuo’s legal team, Brain Chambers, is seeking:
– Full custody of the children, citing their tender age and the father’s neglect.
– Monthly payments of ₦500,000 for the children’s welfare and another ₦500,000 for her upkeep until she secures employment.
– A share of their joint businesses (supermarkets and guest house).
– A perpetual injunction barring Hon. Ihezuo from taking the children abroad without her consent.

Lawmaker’s Denials:

Hon. Ikenna Ihezuo has however denied being legally or customarily married to Mrs. Abigail Akachi Ihezuo, describing her custody suit as a “gold-digging venture.”

In his counter-affidavit, he asserted that their relationship never progressed to marriage under Ugiri-Ibeme customs after her family discovered she was pregnant during initial rites. He dismissed her allegations of abuse and neglect as sensational lies designed to exploit his status as a lawmaker.

While disputing joint ownership of businesses, the lawmaker accused Abigail Ihezuo of diverting funds from a business he solely funded to finance an alleged affair with a church member, Brian.

He maintained that her sudden departure from their home was voluntary, following her refusal to account for missing business proceeds.
