Senegal’s President Bassirou Faye has removed Ousmane Sonko, prime minister, from office and dissolved the entire government.
The decision was announced late Friday via a presidential decree on state television.
A decree, read out on TV by a presidential aide, said Faye had “ended the duties of Ousmane Sonko… and consequently those of the ministers and secretaries of state who are members of the government”.
Meanwhile, no replacement for Sonko has been named yet.
Sonko, who returned home to supporters in Dakar after the announcement, posted on Facebook, said he “will sleep soundly tonight”.
Faye and Sonko were once close allies. Sonko played a key role in Faye’s 2024 presidential victory after he was barred from running himself.
Sonko’s dismissal followed a parliamentary session on Tuesday during which the prime minister openly criticised Faye.
Their relationship has since deteriorated over several months, with public disagreements on party leadership and other issues.
The sacking comes as Senegal faces serious economic challenges, including high debt levels.
