Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) has confirmed the shutdown of its floating, production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, located off the Bayelsa coastline.
An FPSO vessel is used by the offshore oil and gas industry for the storage of oil as well as the production and processing of hydrocarbons.
The FPSO, named ‘Sea Eagle’, is operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company joint venture (SPDC JV).
SPDC is a Nigerian subsidiary of Shell Plc.
In a statement on Thursday, Michael Adande, spokesperson, SPDC, said the vessel has been “safely anchored for repairs, and relevant authorities were notified”.
He said the offshore crew on board the vessel reported water inflow into the hull of the facility on July 24.
“The water inflow did not affect the section of the FPSO where any crude is stored,” the statement reads.
“An emergency response team has been successfully activated to respond to the incident and to contain the water inflow.”
Adande said that the FPSO could store up to 1.4 million barrels of processed crude and had a production capacity of 170,000 barrels per day.
