Soldier kills’ driver transporting diesel on Ondo highway

A driver identified as Solomon James was allegedly shot dead by a soldier on Wednesday on the Okitipupa-Ore highway in the Odigbo LGA of Ondo.

The incident, which happened at about 2:30 pm, reportedly triggered traffic disruption and outrage among residents.

Witnesses said the incident occurred around 2:30pm while the victim was transporting kegs of diesel in his vehicle along the Okitipupa–Ore highway.

According to witnesses, the driver, a native of Kogi state, was transporting kegs of diesel when a soldier riding on a motorcycle reportedly pursued his vehicle for some distance before opening fire near the D-Choice area of Ore.

The driver was said to have been hit by the gunshots, causing him to lose the control of the vehicle, which veered of the road and crashed into a nearby bush.

Residents further alleged that the soldier and other military personnel involved left the scene shortly after the shooting.

When TheCable visited the area, the vehicle was seen with multiple bullets holes, while residents and motorists had gathered at the scene, causing temporary gridlock along the busy highway.

The circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain unclear. Security authorities have yet to issue an official statement as of the time of filing this report.
