US government shuts down again as lawmakers fail to pass funding bill

The United States government has shut down following the failure of lawmakers to reach an agreement on funding federal operations.

The shutdown was triggered by a lapse in appropriations after congress failed to pass a funding bill.

As a result, non-essential federal agencies have begun to wind down operations.

Hundreds of thousands of federal employees are either being furloughed or required to work without pay.

Essential services, including national security, air traffic control, and emergency response, will continue to operate.

Public services, such as national parks and regulatory offices, as well as other non-essential agencies, are expected to face disruptions.

Congressional leaders said negotiations are ongoing to end the shutdown.

They added that there is no immediate timeline for the restoration of full government operations.

In November 2025, a prolonged standoff between Republicans and Democrats over government spending and healthcare subsidies shut the US government for over 40 days.

A US government shutdown occurs when congress fails to pass budget bills or halts resolutions to fund federal government operations and agencies for the new fiscal year.
