YPP Candidate Pledges Grassroots Empowerment, Accountability, Inclusive Development in Race for House of Reps seat

In a political landscape often dominated by godfatherism and self-serving ambition, Phinehas I. C. Chidike (Okeokpa Nwa Ekeocha), stands as a refreshing departure.

The Young Progressives Party (YPP) candidate for Owerri Federal Constituency is not merely seeking a seat in the Federal House of Representatives; he is answering what he describes as a lifelong call to service.

“I have always tried to put the interests of others before my own,” Chidike declared during his recent interview, “Speaking for people and standing up for their welfare has always come naturally to me. Service to humanity is my motivation.”

A Son of Owerri with Deep Roots

Hailing from Amawom Village, Owerri Nchi Ise, in Owerri Municipal Local Government Area, Chidike is no stranger to the challenges facing his constituency. As the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Reginald Ekeocha of Ekeonunwa, Eke Na Okorie, he grew up immersed in the community he now seeks to represent.

His educational journey began at First Step International Nursery and Primary School before he completed his primary education at Unity Primary School, Owerri. He later attended Government Secondary School, Owerri, and earned a degree in Government and Public Administration from Abia State University, complemented by professional certifications in journalism and other fields.

But it is his professional experience that sets him apart. An Information Technology practitioner, security consultant, and trucking and haulage expert with years of experience, Chidike has also served in various government and public sector capacities. His active membership in the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Imo State Council, has kept him grounded in the realities of ordinary Nigerians – the daily struggles, the frustrations, and the hopes.

Tackling the Three-Headed Monster

When asked about the most pressing challenges facing Owerri Federal Constituency, Chidike did not hesitate: insecurity, poor road infrastructure, and unemployment, with inadequate government support for agriculture as a compounding factor.

“These are not abstract problems,” he explained. “I understand the daily struggles of the people; the poor state of our roads, erosion challenges, and other forms of neglect affecting many communities. I understand how difficult it is for many people to earn daily income and put food on the table. I live among the people, and I understand these challenges because I have experienced them too.”

His proposed solutions are concrete and actionable:

· Rehabilitation and construction of roads across the constituency through strategic engagement with federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs)
· Attraction of federal employment opportunities for qualified constituents
· Improved government support for agriculture
· Promotion of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to encourage entrepreneurship and job creation

A Blueprint for Action, Not Empty Promises

Unlike candidates who offer vague assurances, Chidike has articulated a clear plan for achieving tangible results. His approach combines legislative advocacy, collaboration with federal agencies, and regular community engagement.

“Attracting federal opportunities requires a combination of legislative advocacy, collaboration with federal ministries, departments and agencies, and regular engagement with the people,” he said.

His strategy includes leveraging Zonal Intervention Projects (ZIPs), building productive relationships with MDAs, and conducting regular community consultations to identify priority needs. He has also pledged to monitor projects to ensure proper implementation, a commitment born from frustration with projects that begin with fanfare but end in abandonment.

No Godfather, No Compromise

Perhaps most striking in an era of political patronage is Chidike’s emphatic declaration: “I have no political godfather or financial interests that would compromise my independence in public office.”

This independence is central to his campaign message. He believes public servants should possess “independent means of livelihood and valuable professional skills so that public office is not viewed as an avenue for personal enrichment.”

“I am not seeking public office out of desperation or because I lack a profession,” he stated firmly. “My desire is to restore the rights of citizens, improve their welfare, and promote grassroots participation in governance.”

Accountability as a norm

For Chidike, accountability is not merely a campaign talking point, it is a pledge backed by concrete mechanisms. He has committed to regular accountability reports, periodic town hall meetings, open-door engagement with constituents, and transparent communication through both traditional and digital media.

“Trust must be earned,” he acknowledged. “I therefore ask the people not simply to trust me because of my words, but to judge me by my performance.”

In a move that underscores his commitment to genuine representation, Chidike has even stated that if he fails to deliver, “the people have every right to hold me accountable and recall me from office.”

Bridging Political Divides

In an environment often characterised by bitter partisanship, Chidike has extended an olive branch across party lines.

“Different political opinions are essential in every democracy because they promote debate, improve decision-making, and strengthen governance,” he said. “I believe no individual or political party has a monopoly on good ideas. Just as a tree cannot make a forest, meaningful development requires collaboration among people of different political backgrounds.”

He has pledged to implement good ideas from his political opponents if elected, adding: “After elections, we must see ourselves as equals, development partners, no victor, no vanquished.”

Financial Inclusion and Food Security

At the federal level, Chidike has identified legislation that expands consumer credit and financial inclusion, particularly for local agribusinesses and smallholder farmers across the South-East, as a top priority.

“Such policies would help address economic hardship by increasing access to affordable capital, supporting youth and women-led enterprises, stimulating local industries, creating sustainable employment, and boosting agricultural productivity,” he explained.

He also vowed to support stronger security measures to protect farming communities from criminal activities, enabling farmers to return to their fields and contribute to national food security.

A Rigorous Oversight Vision

On the crucial issue of legislative oversight, Chidike has articulated a sophisticated vision that includes stringent budgetary control, investigative public hearings, mandatory audits and reporting, legislative question time, and citizen engagement.

“In a constitutional democracy, ensuring that government serves the people requires continuous and non-partisan review of executive mandates, policy effectiveness, and resource utilisation,” he said. “I believe continuous oversight is essential to ensuring that government remains accountable to the people and that public resources are managed in the public interest.”

Accessible Leadership

Chidike has promised to remain accessible through a one-phone-line policy and the establishment of constituency offices capable of responding to public concerns and emergencies. He also plans to embrace e-governance to improve communication.

“Modern technology provides opportunities for citizens to communicate directly with their representatives, and I intend to make full use of those opportunities while remaining physically present within the constituency,” he said.

Last line

Chidike’s closing message captures the essence of his campaign: “My aspiration is driven by a desire to serve, empower people, promote inclusive development across Owerri Federal Constituency, and return power to the grassroots.”

“Governance is about the people, not the office holder,” he emphasised. “The citizens are the reason public offices exist, and they deserve to be placed at the centre of government decisions.”

As Imo State prepares for the 2027 general elections, Phinehas I. C. Chidike presents himself not as a politician seeking power, but as a servant seeking to empower. His message resonates with a simple yet powerful conviction: leadership should always be measured by service, integrity, and the positive impact it has on the lives of citizens.

For the people of Owerri Federal Constituency, the choice before them is clear – a candidate who lives among them, understands their struggles, and has the professional competence and personal integrity to deliver meaningful change.
