FACTCHECK: Letter by Swaziland King calling for citizenship from South Africa nations over shortage of men, untrue

A letter where the Eswatini( Swaziland) monarch called for citizenship from South Africa nations over shortage of men in the country has continued trend on social media since Monday.

The letter dated 8th March ,2024, had alleged that King Mswati III, the King of Eswatini calked for citizenship from South Africa nations excluding Malawi, over shortage of men in his Kingdom.

The letter also contained that every men in Swaziland must marry at least five wives.

On Monday, @FonyokaPondoka on X post the letter and wrote, ”I’m moving to Swaziland”.

This posted gained over 76k views and 125 reposts.

Also, on YouTube on Monday, A YouTuber named SWAHILI NATION posted a 10 mins video to discuss the alleged letter by Swaziland King calling for citizenship.

The video on YouTube had 14k views.

This letter also currently being spread across in many WhatsApp groups in Africa.

SWAZILAND (ESWATINI)

Swaziland is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. It is bordered by Mozambique to its northeast and South Africa to its north, west, south, and southeast. At no more than 200 km (120 mi) north to south and 130 km (81 mi) east to west,

Eswatini is one of the smallest countries in Africa; despite this, its climate and topography are diverse, ranging from a cool and mountainous highveld to a hot and dry lowveld.

The population is composed primarily of ethnic Swazis. The prevalent language is Swazi (siSwati in native form). The Swazis established their kingdom in the mid-18th century under the leadership of Ngwane III.

The country and the Swazi take their names from Mswati II, the 19th-century king under whose rule the country was expanded and unified; its boundaries were drawn up in 1881

FINDINGS

However, the government of Swaziland (Eswatini) has disowned the letter, labelling it fake.

On it’s official X account, the government of Swaziland wrote, ”FAKE INFO ALERT]: The public is notified that this circulating notice is fake.”

In a report by Capitalfm.co.ke, it stated that the kingdom of Eswatini has been forced to deny reports it was offering citizenship to men from other southern African countries because of a shortage at home

VERDICT
The letter in circulation that Swaziland King, Mswati III is calling for citizenship from other southern African countries due to shortage of men in the kingdom, is FAKE and  MISLEADING.
