Group petitions police over alleged plan to defy court order in Imo community

The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), has petitioned the Imo State Police Command to stop a planned town union election in Ofekata Orodo Autonomous Community, Mbaitoli LGA, alleging the exercise violates a subsisting High Court order and risks sparking violence.

In a petition dated June 25, 2026, addressed to the Commissioner of Police, RULAAC Executive Director Okechukwu Nwanguma said community stakeholders reported that persons led by Traditional Ruler Eze Marcel Uzegbu were proceeding with plans to hold the election on Sunday, June 28, despite a court order restraining meetings and elections pending determination of a motion.

According to RULAAC, the dispute over the community’s governance is before a competent court, and the order is meant to preserve the status quo. The group said tensions have already led to confrontations between opposing groups, with elders intervening to prevent escalation during a June 21 meeting. RULAAC added that claims by some persons associated with the planned poll that they are “immune from accountability” have heightened anxiety.

The group said it takes no position on the substantive court case but is concerned about public peace and respect for judicial authority. It asked police to investigate the complaints, deploy officers to monitor the community, advise parties to respect due process, and ensure anyone acting unlawfully is dealt with according to law.
