Gunmen kill two, abduct passengers in Kogi

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have killed two persons and abducted several others in Ayegunle Bunu community in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Residents said the attack occurred in the early hours of Monday, June 1, 2026, when the armed men invaded the community and blocked the highway linking the town to neighbouring areas.

According to eyewitnesses, the attackers opened fire on arrival, causing panic as residents fled for safety.

“The attack happened around 2:25 am. The sound of gunshots woke everyone up. The gunmen shot and killed two residents and injured several others,” a community source said, requesting anonymity.

The source added that two residents were abducted from their homes, while other victims were passengers in commercial vehicles who unknowingly ran into the blockade on the highway.

“Efforts are ongoing to determine the exact number of people abducted and the full details of the incident,” the source added.

The Kogi State Police Command confirmed the attack, saying the gunmen blocked the highway leading in and out of Ayegunle Bunu and abducted several travellers.

Police said some victims sustained injuries during the incident and confirmed that operatives had been deployed to the area.

“We have commenced investigation into the incident,” the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, said.

Earlier, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, confirmed that two persons, a pastor in his residence and a passenger in a vehicle, were killed during the attack.
