A leadership crisis is rocking the Imo State Labour Party (LP), with party leaders warning of mass defections if Barr. Ezerioha Nelson succeeds in his bid to become State Chairman, displacing Chief Charles Ugochukwu.
Ugochukwu, from Orlu Zone, took over after Mazi Excel Ochiama was elevated to the party’s National Working Committee. The chairmanship seat has been zoned to Orlu, but Nelson—who hails from Oru East LGA and serves as the party’s Legal Adviser—is now challenging that arrangement.
All 27 LGA chairmen and 305 ward chairmen have vowed to abandon the party if Nelson takes over, warning of mass defections and litigation. The Oru East LP chairman said there would be “no LP in Oru East” if the change happens.
Critics also note that Nelson never participated in LP activities before this sudden ambition, and some suspect he is backed by hidden interests, especially as his home LGA is also that of the Imo Governor and the APC state chairman.
