Fact-Check: Viral video of protesters begging Nigerian army “to take over Nigeria“, did not take place in Ibadan recently — an August Edo protest

Many persons on Facebook, X, and Instagram have shared a video of protesters asking the Nigerian army to take over from President Tinubu and claimed it happened recently in Ibadan.

Verdict

This claim is MISLEADING.
A resident in Ibadan told FACTWATCH that no protest took place recently in the city or elsewhere in Oyo State. Also, checks on the TikTok username watermarked on the video, showed that the video was first posted on 2nd August 2nd in Edo State.

A video of protesters calling on the Nigerian army to take over from President Bola Tinubu is currently circulating on social media platforms.

Many persons on FacebookXInstagram, and YouTube shared this on Thursday and Friday.

On X, a user, Sebastian Ogbonnaya, posted this video and wrote, “Today Thursday 17th Oct protesters in Ibadan blocked Nigerian Army vehicles asking them to take over government from president Tinubu…..

“We are gradually getting there.
I keep on saying it… you guys ain’t seen nothing yet!!

“Let us wait till January, February 2025,… that is when “come” will turn to “become” 

“emilokan, right?
“emilokan nii !! 

Another X user BUCOS shared the same video and said, “BREAKING!!! NIGERIANS LOST THEIR COOL AND CONFRONTED SOLDIERS TO TAKE OVER THE AFFAIRS OF THE COUNTRY WHILE CHANTING “TINUBU MUST GO”. The greatest Nigerians, kindly retweet massively till it gets to them, may be this will send them a signal to know how bitter Nigerians are.

Nigerians have continued to face hardship after the government increased the Petrol price to over ₦1,000 per liter.

Verification

First no credible news organization in Nigeria reported that a protest took place recently in Ibadan, Oyo State.

When FACTWATCH contacted a resident in Ibadan, Femi Damilola told this Fact Checker that apart from the August protest, no other protest has taken place in the State recently.

When this Fact Checker traced the video using the TikTok username on it, it was discovered that @mikkyforlie0 posted this video first on 2nd August during the #EndBadGovernance protest in Edo State.

In the TikTok video @mikkyforlie0 shared, this Fact Checker saw a billboard of the Edo PDP’s governorship, Asue Ighodalo. This confirmed that the protest took place in Edo before the gubernatorial election in the State.

Conclusion

Social media users recirculated a video of the August protest in Edo State to claim it was a recent one in Ibadan.
