Wamakko and his family members over this loss. “Though death is no respecter of age, the loss of such a young woman in her prime is particularly touching. “I share the pain and grief of Senator Wamakko; I pray to Allah to comfort him and give him the fortitude to overcome this great loss of a dear daughter. ”May Allah grant her eternal bliss and reward her good deeds with paradise,” he added. He prayed Allah to comfort Wamakko and members of his family at the difficult moment.

You Attended To Doctors, Attend To Us Too, JOHESU Tells FG

……JOHESU strike unnecessary, illegal ,FG Says The Joint Health Workers Union (JOHESU) on Monday said the federal government should attend to its demands with the same seriousness it attached to those of the National Association of Resident Doctors. JOHESU President, Dr. Biobelomoye Josiah, made the remarks in an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily as its members commenced a nationwide strike on Monday. The residents doctors, under NARD, also downed tools last week but called it off days after coming to an agreement with federal government representatives. JOHESU, which is the umbrella body of health workers’ unions and associations in the country, said its demanded merited such urgent attention, too. “We gave a 15-day notice that was to expire by Sunday, midnight,” Josiah said. “They reached out to us on Thursday. They waited until Thursday. “When we went into the discussions, rather than go in with open minds, they started with intimidation. They threatened us, and at the end of the day, they followed up with insincerity, gross insincerity and dishonesty on their part of discussions. “We took it back to our NEC. And the expanded NEC reviewed everything and found out that there was nothing tangible.” The JOHESU chief said one of its demands include the correction of COVID-19 allowances being paid to its members. “They are still paying the faulty 10 percent to our members, when the agreement said they should be paying 50 percent,” he said. “Paragraph 1a of the agreement was explicit – whoever was earning N5,000, replace that N5,000 with 50 percent of COVID allowance.” Other than the COVID allowance, Josiah added that its members have been punished for previous strikes actions with the implementation of the federal government’s ‘no work, no pay’. “JOHESU has been peaceful for two years,” he said. “We waited for them to solve all these problems and they refused. “Even court judgement has said they should implement in four weeks. This judgement was passed in March 2019. And we waited patiently and they decided that our patience is foolishness, our patriotism is stupidity. “So JOHESU members have decided that even if it is going to be their death, they would rather be off again, because the caregiver must be alive to also give his care.” Dr. Josiah was in combative mood on Monday during his interview. He lamented the poor attention the union has received from federal government representatives and vowed that union leaders were ready to go to prison for their stand. “When there is gross bias exhibited . . . others have gone on strike during the climax of COVID in this country,” he said. “They never say they have apprehended any strike, they discussed and then they gave six over eight. We reduced our demands from over 15 to five; and then we said okay, just give three. And they are still playing games with it. “On the first of July, we agreed with them to correct this COVID-19 allowances, they refused to correct it, and then our consolidated salary adjustment, which they entered that agreement in 2017, to be implemented in five weeks; and today, it’s three years now. Have they done it? No. “If conciliation fails, what next? If conciliation comes with dishonesty, what next? If a conciliator is biased, what next? We have given a 15-day ultimatum and the legal books they are referring to, says for those in essential services, that you must give 15 days before you withdraw services. And that is exactly what we have done. And within the 15 days, “They threatened us with no work, no pay, with court orders. JOHESU leaders are ready to be in prison. I think the courts are not stupid. “Some of the reasons we went on strike for in 2018, structural decay, the management of the system, was to make the system better for Nigerians. And they punished us for that. So it’s not just because of our allowances. We are in a family; we make up 95 percent of the family.” However the Federal Government has described the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) strike which commence on Sunday midnight as “unnecessary, ill-timed and illegal”. Sen. Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment, said this in a statement signed by Mr Charles Akpan, Deputy Director, Press and Public Relations, in the ministry, on Sunday in Abuja. The union had, in a letter addressed to Ngige, said it would go ahead with the strike scheduled to commence in the midnight of Sunday. It cited Federal Government’s inability to meet its demand as the reason for its action. Ngige said that the Federal Government had directed that the various unions in the health sector operating under the umbrella of JOHESU should not to go ahead with the strike. He urged the leadership of the various unions that made up JOHESU to have a rethink on the illegal strike by putting the welfare of their patients and Nigeria above every other consideration. He noted that issues in the trade dispute between JOHESU and the Ministry of Health were being discussed. According to him, going ahead with the action would be illegal as it is in clear breach of the ILO Principles and Conventions on Strike and Section 18 of the Trades Disputes Act, Cap T8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. “Parties in disputes are expected not to arm-twist, intimidate or foist helplessness on the other party while negotiations are ongoing as per Sections 8 and 18 the of Trade Dispute Act (TDA) 2004. “This bars any strike when the matters are before a Conciliator and undergoing conciliation. “Any strike now is inimical to an equable settlement of the dispute, bearing in mind especially that this is a grave period of a pandemic where the Federal Government has spent about N20 billion to pay April/May 2020 hazard allowance. “An additional N8.9 billion for June 2020 COVID-19 hazard and inducement allowances has also been approved to all categories of health workers that are mainly JOHESU

Failed state: Presidency, ACF attack Obasanjo as Ohanaeze, Afenifere defend ex-president

The Presidency on Sunday berated former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his Thursday’ s comment on the state of the nation , describing him as the country ’ s ‘ divider-in-chief . ’ The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity , Garba Shehu , said this in a statement titled “ Obasanjo is Nigeria ’ s divider-in-chief . ” But socio- political groups in the country differed on the Presidency’ s attack on Obasanjo . While the pan- northern socio -political group , the Arewa Consultative Forum , advised Obasanjo to stop presenting himself as a saint , the Ohanaeze Ndigbo said the former President ’ s administration was more credible than the regime of the President Muhammadu Buhari On its part, the pan-Yoruba socio- political group , Afenifere , said Obasanjo was more pan-Nigerian than Buhari , whom it accused of dividing Nigeria along religious and ethnic lines. Obasanjo had on Thursday said Nigeria was slowly becoming a failed state and a basket case that urgently needed to be pulled from the brink of collapse . Speaking while delivering a speech titled, “ Moving Nigeria away from tipping over ” at a consultative dialogue in Abuja , the former President said he had never seen Nigeria so divided, adding that many of the problems plaguing the country were due to the recent mismanagement of Nigeria ’ s diversity. But Shehu said with his comment which he described as unfair attacks on the President and his regime , Obasanjo had descended from the lofty heights of a commander- chief . He stated, “ In his most recent statement , former President Olusegun Obasanjo attempts to divide the nation while President Muhammadu Buhari continues to promote nation building and the unity of Nigeria . “ The difference is clear . From the lofty heights of Commander- in- Chief , General Obasanjo has descended to the lowly level of divider- in-chief ( to adapt the coinage of Time) . ” The presidential aide said as some commentators were already suggesting , Obasanjo should, in accordance with his mantra as a statesman , get involved with problem – solving instead of helping the “ mushrooming of a poisonous atmosphere of ethnic and religious nationalism. ” He said the former President must have disappointed many of his local and foreign admirers by showering commendations on a few extremist groups which had vowed to shun the invitation to the National Assembly to participate in the process of constitutional amendment. Shehu added that Obasanjo must have left his admirers confused in announcing the support for the boycott of a democratic process of changing the constitution , at the same time calling for dialogue and engagement. The statement added , “ The fact that the process he ushered in under his administration with the dubious intention of amendments that sought tenure elongation failed –as did two other attempts by the successor administrations of the same political party– does not in any way justify his dismissal of the exercise by the 9th Assembly as another waste of time and resources . “ To the credit of the All Progressives Congress-led 8th Assembly, the process of constitution amendment was carried through , paving the way for , among other benefits , the financial independence of local government councils , state Houses of Assembly and the country ’ s judiciary. These changes have already been signed into law by the President as mandated by the constitution. “ The recent decisions by the administration as they relate to subsidy withdrawal , helping to plug some of the most horrendous notorious holes and release of scarce resources for the more pressing needs of the people have also not escaped the ire of the former President . “ It ’ s a known fact that the withdrawal of subsidies had been on the wish list of the Obasanjo – led Peoples Democratic Party. They failed in achieving these measures because, one there was a shared greed . Theo plundered the treasury as much as anyone could in the name of either subsidy or waiver with reckless impunity . “ Two , is to say it takes courage and rare statesmanship on the part of a leader to do as President Buhari to shun populism and seek the best interest of the people and the state, providing the kind of reform and development that Nigeria urgently needs. ” Shehu boasted that Buhari had run a nadministratio focused on infrastructural development. He said with his achievements and the more to come , it was not surprising that Buhari would be an object of envy from politicians who he said failed to deliver. He added , “ It ( Buhari ’ s ) is a pro- business administration that has used diplomacy to unlock bilateral trade and investments. “ He leads a government that has liberalised the investment climate and market access by achieving reforms that have placed the country in the list of the world ’ s top reforming economies. “ Nigeria , which other nations had mocked and ridiculed for so many things that were wrong is today progressing at a pace reflecting its size and potential. “ With so much to show and many more coming , it is little surprise that President Buhari would be the object of envy and harsh unfair challenges by politicians who failed to deliver, but continue to nurse ambitions of delighting the audience long after their curtain has been drawn. ” Shehu also faulted the views of some analysts on Buhari ’ s recent advice to West African leaders to avoid tenure elongation. He said contrary to the assertions by the few analysts , Buhari’ s recent speech in which he advised West African Presidents against tenure elongation beyond constitutional limits had been consistent with his long -held views on the need to adhere to the rule of law . Also , the Minister of Information , Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a statement

Nigeria’s revenue dropped by 65%, says finance minister

………Finance minister contradicts Presidency, says food prices rising The Minister of Finance , Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, says Nigeria ’ s revenue has dropped by about 65 per cent . She said this necessitated the decision of the President Muhammadu Buhari to discontinue the payment of petrol subsidy . Ahmed said this on NTA ’ s ‘Good Morning Nigeria ’ programme on Monday which was monitored by our correspondent. She said if the petrol subsidy returns, it would lead to fuel scarcity because the government would not be able to pay marketer. The minister stated , “ What we have been doing is not sustainable . If we bring back fuel subsidy , we will fail because we will not be able to pay it and the problem of disputes with marketers will come back , then we will have queues again . We just cannot afford it and therefore this deregulation must be made to work . “ We appeal to Nigerians to understand that in the past when subsidy was done , we could afford to do it but right now , we cannot pay . Remember that right now our revenue has gone down by about 65 per cent. So , it is not business as usual . We cannot do what we used to do anymore. ” She said Nigeria is currently facing difficult times like many other countries around the world . The minister stated that the price of petrol would henceforth be determined by the price of crude oil . When asked if subsidy would return if the price of crude oil bounces back to how it was in previous years , Ahmed said it was unlikely that would happen . She, however , said the decision remains that subsidy would not return . Also the Minister of Finance , Zainab Ahmed, says food prices are indeed going up . This is contrary to claims by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity , Garba Shehu, who said last week that food prices were dropping She, however , said it was unlikely that the prices of food would rise further because of the increase in the price of petrol, adding that most trucks conveying agricultural produce use diesel and not petrol. Ahmed said it would be good if subsidy could be targeted at certain sectors and not to all Nigerians as was done in the previous administration. Responding to a question , she said , “ It is true that food prices are going up and as I said earlier on , sensible subsidy is the one that is done on production, not on consumption because when you use gasoline in your car , you burn it and you have to put it in your car again and burn it. “ But if you now change the regime and say any truck that carries food or produce, the diesel price is subsidised , you are subsidising production because it means food items get to the market cheaper but as long as you are subsidising consumption , whether it is fuel or electricity, there will always be the propensity for gain in the system and then there is always the fact that you are subsiding everybody and it is not everybody that needs it. ” The President ’ s spokesman had said last week that food prices were on the decline and even berated a Channels Television guest for saying otherwise . Shehu had said , “ To say that the prices of food isn’ t coming down, I think the scholar has detached himself from the market because we sat through the meeting of the National Food Security Council and we heard presentations by experts – people who had surveyed the markets . “ As of yesterday ( Thursday) , in the morning of the meeting, go and check the index in markets . For instance in Kano , millets that had gone up to N 24, 000 has now gone down to N 12, 000, N 13, 000. Rice that had been N 25, 000 is now N 20, 000. Corn, maize is now N 18, 000 for the old stock and N 14, 000, N 15, 000 for the new stock . “ So , to say that there is no change in the prices is to show one is completely detached from what is happening in the country. ”

Obasanjo says Nigeria Is Falling Apart Under Buhari, Offers Solution

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said the Nigerian state is failing and badly divided due to the recent mismanagement of the country. Obasanjo made the comment in Abuja on Thursday while delivering a speech titled ‘Moving Nigeria Away from Tipping Over’ at a consultative dialogue attended by various socio-cultural groups, according to a report by Punch Newspaper. The consultative dialogue was attended by members of various groups, including Afenifere, Middle Belt Forum, Northern Elders Forum, Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo and Pan Niger Delta Forum. “I do appreciate that you all feel sad and embarrassed as most of us feel as Nigerians with the situation we find ourselves in,” Obasanjo said. “Today, Nigeria is fast drifting to a failed and badly divided state; economically our country is becoming a basket case and poverty capital of the world, and socially, we are firming up as an unwholesome and insecure country. “And these manifestations are the products of recent mismanagement of diversity and socio-economic development of our country. Old fault lines that were disappearing have opened up in greater fissures and with drums of hatred, disintegration and separation and accompanying choruses being heard loud and clear almost everywhere.” According to the Punch Newspaper report, Obasanjo said those calling for the country’s breakup must remember that, in the event of a split, citizens would still be neighbours and need to conduct relations among one another. He said unity is important to solve the problems bedevilling the nation and commended the consultative forum idea. “With what I have seen, read and heard from the rapprochement that you are forging together, I see a ray of hope that Nigeria can be saved from disintegration,” he said. “If we are ready to live together in understanding, mutual respect and love with equity, justice, inclusiveness while engendering sense of belonging and unity of purpose and all hands on deck, we can deal with internal issues of terrorism, organised crimes, banditry, kidnapping, human trafficking, drug, money laundering and corruption. We will then be able to deal successfully with any incoming attack of terrorism, organised crimes, etc; from outside.”

The moves are contained in a statement by the Director-General of the National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration and Control , Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye on Saturday titled: ‘ NAFDAC cautions on alcohol abuse . ’ She said , “ NAFDAC under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Health , once again , wishes to bring to the attention of the general public , concerns relating to the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages in sachets , small volume glass and PET bottles . “ These concerns relate to negative effects of irresponsible alcohol consumption on public health and on the safety and security of the public, alcohol being a toxic and psychoactive substance with dependence producing properties . “ Uncontrolled access and availability of high concentration alcohol in sachet and small volume PET or glass bottles has been put forward as a factor contributing to substance and alcohol abuse in Nigeria with its negative impact on the society . “ The World Health Organisation reports that alcohol consumption contributes to three million deaths each year globally as well as to the disabilities and poor health of millions of people. “ NAFDAC with full support of the Federal Ministry of Health has continued to exercise its regulatory responsibilities by ensuring that all alcoholic beverages and other regulated products approved by the agency meet set standards of quality , safety and wholesomeness. “ The Federal Ministry of Health is concerned about the high incidence of substance and alcohol abuse in the country and NAFDAC , being the competent authority and working with relevant stakeholders, is increasing efforts to stem this . “ With regard to alcohol , major stakeholders have been engaged at the highest level and are already sensitised to the issue.
