Mailafia: Na’Abba, Utomi, others threaten ‘major protest

The National Consultative Front being piloted by a former Speaker of the House of Representatives , Umar Na ’ Abba and former presidential candidate, Pat Utomi , on Friday condemned the third invitation extended by the Department of State Services to a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria , Obadiah Mailafia . The NCFront threatened “ a major mass action” should anything happen to its leaders and associates , including Mailafia . The organisation called on the government to refrain from further harassment of Mailafia and its other leaders by cautioning security agencies . A statement by the group ’ s Head of Public Affairs Bureau and former presidential candidate of the National Conscience Party, Tanko Yunusa , said the invitation scheduled for Monday in Jos would be coming on the heels of a similar one by the Nigerian Police which is currently being contested in court . The statement partly read , “ We demand that nothing untoward should happen to any of our leaders and associates to avoid a major mass action. The NCFront believes in the right of every Nigerian to freely express themselves in civil society especially in a democracy as enshrined in the universal fundamental principles of human rights. “ We , therefore , unequivocally condemn this maltreatment of a respectable Nigerian like him and we stand firmly by him in this hour of his travails . Painting Mailafia in a bad light and attempting to pin on him an image of criminality is not only preposterous but also sinister. “ We are shocked to discover that Nigeria today is being run like a dictatorship by the current administration, which has developed a great penchant for gaging Nigerian citizens , denying them of their constitutional rights of freedom of expression and peaceful dissention . “ We , as concerned citizens , have reviewed Mailafia ’ s interviews, which was claimed to have prompted the curious invitation by security agencies and can not find any serious threat or breach in it to warrant his being constantly harassed by the security agencies, especially the Police and the DSS . “ We also note that Nigeria is currently bedeviled by aggravated insecurity that threatens the very existence of the country and would expect the security agencies to be preoccupied with dealing with such deadly existential threats against the country rather than concentrating all their energies on repressing a responsible citizen into silence . In a democracy, the citizens are protected by the law to freely express themselves without any form of intimidation by government . “ However , it is increasingly obvious that this government does not appreciate that vital component of democracy judging by the manners it has so far treated Nigerians who do not agree with its policies including journalists . This is not only unacceptable but absolutely reprehensible. ”

Robbery: MKO Abiola’s children sue police for N100m over arrest, detention

Two children of the late MKO Abiola , Kassim Abiola , and Aliyu Abiola , have filed a N 100m fundamental rights enforcement suit against the Commissioner of Police over their arrest and detention by men of the Special Anti -Robbery Squad since September 2. In the fundamental rights suit filed on their behalf by Chief Mike Ozekhome ( SAN) , Kassim and Aliyu alleged that they were arrested on the instigation of their stepmother , Mrs Adebisi Abiola , who allegedly suspected them to have had a hand in the recent robbery attack on MKO Abiola ’ s house in Ikeja , Lagos . In an affidavit filed in support of the suit , a litigation clerk in Ozekhome ’ s law firm , Ubong Ikon, said Kassim and Aliyu were picked up at their father ’ s house, 42- 46 MKO Abiola Crescent, Off Toyin Street , Ikeja, at about 11. 45am on September 2 by fully armed SARS operatives , who forced their way into their apartments without any warrant of arrest. Ikon said , “ The applicants were tortured, totally humiliated , dehumanised and terrorised , with a crowd of people swarming the premises to witness the ugly scene in the home of MKO Abiola , a former presidential aspirant of the Social Democratic Party. “ The applicants were informed that their arrest was based on an alleged complaint by one Mrs Adebisi Abiola , their stepmother, to the effect that a robbery incident took place in their home; that suspected armed men invaded the residence and carted away valuables, including money. “ The applicants were forcibly dragged like common criminals , more in form of abduction than arrest and roughly driven to the Ikeja police station. “ They were promptly detained without any record, howsoever . They were not given any opportunity to speak with anyone, let alone a lawyer . ” Ikon added that on the following day , the police took Kassim and Aliyu back to their apartments to conduct a search, and nothing incriminating was found . Ozekhome , in the suit filed before the Lagos State High Court in Lagos , contended that the arrest and continued detention of Kassim and Aliyu’ s were a violation of their fundamental rights under sections 35, 37, 41, 44 and 46 of the 1999 Constitution . He prayed the court to order their immediate release, noting that Kassim and Aliyu were about to travel to the United States for further education . He prayed the court to order the police to pay them N 100m as exemplary damages and to tender a public apology to them .

Okemati also urged residents to collaborate with local vigilante teams to curb insecurity in the area. The brother of the deceased, Mr Babatunde Saliman, told NAN that the hoodlums arrived at the market around 8: p.m. and started shooting sporadically and eventually the bullet hit her on the back. “I met her at the market lying in a pool of blood; some of her friends who came to the scene said that she was pregnant. “Her body has been released by the police and was taken to Ikorodu General Hospital mortuary in preparation to transport her to her home town in Kwara State,” he said. Mali Junta To Discuss 2-Year Transition Govt

A forum in Mali debating how to restore civilian rule on Friday discussed a proposal to appoint a two-year transitional government, heavily influenced by the military junta. The proposal, made by junta-appointed experts, has been submitted to about 500 participants from political parties, unions and NGOs at a three-day conference in the capital Bamako. The talks mark the second round of discussions between the young officers who overthrew President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita on August 18 and civilian representatives, many of whom had campaigned for him to resign. The junta, just hours after the coup, pledged to restore civilian government and stage elections within a “reasonable time”. But many participants at the forum are divided over issues such as how long a transition government should last, and what role the army should play. Under the proposals to be discussed on Friday, which were seen by AFP, the military would retain a strong hold on government. A two-year transitional government would be led by a president picked by the army, for example, although the text stipulates that the office could be filled by either a “civil or military personality”. The president would also nominate the prime minister, according to the text, and an army officer would lead a proposed 51-member legislative body, dubbed the “national transition council”. Whoever is appointed president would be unable to run for president at the end of the two-year transition, however. The prime minister would likewise be forbidden from running for office. The proposal sparked lively and sometimes-tense debates among the forum participants on Friday. But the next steps remain unclear. The junta has not clarified whether it will release a final version of the text, nor if its recommendations would be followed. Several officials, who declined to be named, nonetheless said that the ruling army officers will decide a course of action based on a summary of the forum’s separate debates. Any document will only be published after the end of the forum on Saturday, at an unspecified date, the officials added. The junta had initially talked of a three-year transition, corresponding to the time left in Keita’s second five-year mandate, that would be overseen by a soldier. – Military rule – The 15-nation regional bloc ECOWAS has taken a hard line, insisting that Mali’s ruling army officers hand over power within 12 months. It has also closed borders and banned trade with the nation of some 19 million people. Given the pressure from the international community, it is unclear how delegates at the Bamako forum will receive the proposals for the two-year transition government. There are also deep divisions within the so-called June 5 Movement (M5), which engineered the wave of anti-Keita protests in the run-up to the coup. Under the proposals, members of the movement would sit on the national transition council. Some voices within the M5 argue in favour of giving the military a long handover in order to tackle the problems that have driven the country to the brink. Others say that this would simply worsen instability — four more Malian troops were killed in an attack on the eve of the talks — and set a poor example for democracy in West Africa. Mahmoud Dicko, an influential imam who is viewed as the figurehead of the June 5 Movement, pushed for civilian government in an interview on national television on Wednesday. “We have nothing to gain by turning the international community against us,” he said. Hike in Food Prices Is Temporary -Gambari

Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Ibrahim Gambari, says the hike in prices of food items should be seen as a transient situation. Speaking on Thursday during the national food security council meeting, held at the State House, Abuja, Mr. Gambari said the recent prices of grains show a significant decline which suggests that the decrease would soon be reflected across the country as new products are brought into the market. He said, “Yesterday, my office as the secretariat, National Food Security Council, met with the agricultural commodity association to ascertain the root causes of the recent spike in food prices and craft mitigating strategies to what could be a potential crisis. “Although various concerns were raised on the root cause of the increase in commodity cost, we have been informed that prices are actually on the decline as new grains have been introduced to the market. “For example, new maize which was previously sold for N25,000 per bag is now being sold between N12,000 and N17,000, and it’s expected to fall between N7,000 and N8,000 per bag by November 2020, according to the various leaders of the agricultural commodity association. The price decline has also been experienced in millet, beans, and sorghum. The hike, therefore, is to be seen as a transient situation. “With Mr. President being among us, as somebody who knows about farming and agriculture perhaps more than many of us in the room, we believe his presence is very instructive in addressing not just this hike and transient nature and pricing of foodstuff, but also to underscore the importance he personally and as Mr. President and his administration attaches to the issue of national food security. “However, it is important to note that the most prevailing concern of the various leaders of the agricultural commodity association, was their demand that there should be better coordination, synergy, and cooperation across the sector. This has largely accounted for the gross misinformation and nationwide speculation which is being experienced. “Not disregarding the impact of other value triggers such as the cyclical off-season period phenomenon, the COVID-19 pandemic, and infrastructure challenges, the importance of collaboration can still not be overemphasized.” The diplomat said it is time that the nation pivots its attention and resources to how it can improve yield per hectare, even as key actors in the agric space are championing increased hectares under cultivation. According to him, this new shift will be a significant boost in the government’s determination to strengthen its objective in achieving food security.

OPINION: Bandits take over Abuja while DSS, police go after protesters

Frederick Nwabufo Nothing puts greater timbre on the parlous state of security in the country than the denudation of the virtual hedges and moats around the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and the disarray of the phalanx of boots in the city. Abuja was once assumed to be impregnable and residents lived with a false sense of security. But the terrorist blitzes in the national’s capital in 2013 and 2014 jolted many out of the reverie. With the dawning of the Buhari administration, the bombing in the city petered out. The security forces also appeared to have nicked the insecurity in the north-east to subsidence at the time. I recall that in 2016, Tukur Buratai, chief of army staff, in a fit of showmanship presented a flag reportedly retrieved from the last frontier of the insurgents to President Muhammadu Buhari. But a few months after the “big show”, the insurgency metastasised. What really happened? As a matter of fact, the FCT enjoyed a bit of calm from terrorism but with flickers of other crimes like armed robbery, one-chance operations, rape and car-jacking. However, as the Buhari administration lost its compass by sleight of abominable incompetence, the entire security bearing of the city and the country caved in – from Borno, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara to Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa bandits expropriated pieces of earth. While some of us in Abuja had looked on the devastation of insurgency and banditry in other parts of the country from a ‘’safe’’ distance and with a smirk of privilege, “the doom” comes right at our doors. Really, the Buhari administration has failed spectacularly to secure Nigerians everywhere and anywhere. The government has also failed to secure the very corners from where it sits to preside over the country. What an extravagant failure! Abuja is home to the headquarters of the DSS, the police, the army, the air force, the navy, the NIA, the DIA, and other security and paramilitary agencies. But right under the lenses of this octopus of agencies, bandits are attacking communities within the territory and on the fringes of the city. What a phenomenal shame! If they cannot secure their base and the areas around it with diligence, can they secure anywhere else in the country? The DSS and the police, in particular, appear to be very dutiful in combating civil protests and in arresting dissenters. This is while the nation is taken up in galling insecurity. The expertise of these agencies is demonstrable on the civilian population, not on those who have picked up arms against the state. Just a few days ago, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) issued an anticipatory warning to its officers, saying Boko Haram insurgents had set up hotbeds in Abuja and that they were oiling their cannons to launch attacks on five locations across the nation’s capital. In an internal memo, H.A. Sabo, comptroller of enforcement at the customs headquarters, asked officers to be on the alert. He spelt out the locations in Abuja, Kogi and Nasarawa where the nurseries of these terrorists are bubbling. “Information reaching the comptroller-gen eral of customs (CGC) reveals the existence of Boko Haram terrorist (BHTs) camps in and around the Federal Capital Territory,” the memo read. “Further reports have it that they are planning to attack some selected targets within the territory. They are reported to have set up their camps in the following identified enclaves: Kunyam Bush along airport road, off DIA Staff Quarters – Abuja; Robochi/Gwagwalada forest; Kwaku forest, Kuje, Abuja; Unaisha forest in Toto local government of Nasarawa state and Gegu forest, close to Idu town in Kogi state. “Consequently, you are to be at alert and security conscious of your environment at all times.’’ What is most disconcerting in the memo is the tone of helplessness by the customs – “consequently, you are to be at alert and security conscious of your environment at all times”. What could be more dispiriting? If an agency in the security network is gripped by trepidation, then it is a serious cause for alarm. We should all be worried. On Thursday, bandits pushing violence in the Gwagwalada axis of the FCT struck at Tunga Maje, a suburb of Abuja, reportedly kidnapping 20 people after a vehemence of brutality on the community. The community has become a select victim of the invaders who attacked the area some weeks ago. What is telling about the recent attack is that it happened just days after the customs’ memo was reported. There is no reprieve from torment for the residents of Tunga Maje who have to endure intolerable trauma. The government has failed them just as it has failed other Nigerians in states under the reign of bandits and insurgents. Also, there have been coordinated attacks by bandits in other parts of the FCT – in Kuje where a traditional ruler was kidnapped and in Pegi where nine people including a 12-year-old were abducted. And with every successful onslaught, these gunmen are revivified and excited to inch into the city centre. There have been three reported attacks on a road in Life Camp so far. Insecurity anywhere should concern us all. First, the security crisis was localised in Borno, then it mushroomed in Yobe, Bauchi and Adamawa; it took the form of banditry in the north-west, and now it is metastasising in the north-central — with Abuja as a trophy target. We must not discount insecurity anywhere. We are all potential victims. One thing stands out: The Buhari administration has failed on security in all axes – even in its house.
